Chinese genetics firm BGI has stated its opposition to the recent US export restrictions on some of its units and urged for “open and inclusive global scientific collaboration.”

In an email statement, BGI said that the US Commerce Department’s decision may have been influenced by misinformation and that it would be willing and able to clarify the situation.

The company also emphasized that none of its units are state-owned or state-controlled, and all of its services and research are for civilian and scientific purposes. It added that it would never be involved in human rights abuses.

Last week, the Biden administration announced export restrictions for dozens of Chinese entities, including some BGI units and server maker Inspur Group, citing activities contrary to US national security and foreign-policy interests.

The move has drawn criticism from China, with the Ministry of Commerce urging the US to stop the “unreasonable suppression” of Chinese firms, calling it an act of economic bullying and market distortion.

Other Chinese firms added to the US’s so-called Entity List include Inspur and Loongson, which are both integral to China’s efforts to replace foreign-made technology and promote domestic innovation.
